Nation has a commitment to developing an equitable health care system to ensure ‘Health for All’ and sustainable quality of life for the people of Bangladesh. To translate this commitment into a reality we need caring, skilled, confident, devoted, and high-quality medical professionals. To fulfill this purpose, Ibrahim Medical College (IMC) has established at 1/1, Ibrahim Sarani, Shegunbaghicha in the year 2002 by Bangladesh Diabetic Samity (BADAS) after the name of late national professor Dr. Md. Ibrahim v/ho was a legendary physician, teacher, and social reformer. BADAS has established Ibrahim Medical College with a vision to develop it as a ‘trend-setter’ medical institution in terms of a high standard of medical education and research. IMC has large and experienced faculty members with a well-equipped college and a multi-disciplinary hospital facility. BIRDEM General Hospital which is an about 750-bed multi-disciplinary hospital complex at Shahbagh is the teaching hospital of IMC. The hospital has been recognized nationally and internationally as a center of excellence for medical services and research and has been designated as a World Health Organization (WHO) collaborating center on diabetes and endocrine disorders.
Prof. Mohammad Ibrahim’s contribution in the field of medicine in general and diabetes, in particular, has been nothing less than phenomenal. He was a successful physician, a gifted teacher, a talented organizer, and a great social reformer. Prof. Ibrahim was the founder of the Diabetic Association of Pakistan and later of Bangladesh. With his initiative Diabetic Association’s small outpatient clinic at Segunbagicha, has grown over the years into the imposing prestigious BIRDEM at Shahbagh, presently designated as a WHO Collaborating Centre on Diabetes, Endocrine, and Metabolic Disorders, only of its kind in Asia. BIRDEM’s long journey from Segunbaghicha to Shahbag is a tale of the dedication and devotion of Prof. Md. Ibrahim. He was a great physician. His humility to his patients was genuine. He used to say to his humblest of patients ‘I am grateful to you for the opportunity you have given me to serve you’. Deep empathy and compassion were characteristics of his dealing with his patients, especially those who were poor and in pain. As a teacher, he always laid emphasis on punctuality, discipline, devotion to duty, and practice rather than precept. Prof. Ibrahim instilled confidence and trust in his students and helped them to inculcate the habit of deducting reasoning, inquiry, and adherence to clinical methods.
Ibrahim always believed that an institution achieves its goal and excellence not by bricks and mortars, nor by machines or metals but by their human resources and he spent all his life in developing these human resources. Ibrahim Medical College is another Institute of The Diabetic Association of Bangladesh dedicated to his memory and committed to developing the human resources for the health of the highest order, true to the ideals of Prof. Ibrahim.

As part of the Bengal plain, the city is bounded by the Buriganga River, Turag River, Dhaleshwari River, and Shitalakshya River. The area of Dhaka has been inhabited since the first millennium. The city rose to prominence in the 17th century as a provincial capital and commercial center of the Mughal Empire. Dhaka was the capital of the proto-industrialized Mughal Bengal for 75 years (1608–39 and 1660–1704). As the center of the muslin trade in Bengal, it was one of the most prosperous cities in the world. The medieval city was named Jahangirabad in honour of the Mughal Emperor Jahangir. It hosted the seat of the Mughal Subahdar, Naib Nazims, Dhaka Nawabs, and Dewans. Medieval Dhaka’s glory peaked in the 17th and 18th centuries when it was home to merchants from across Eurasia. It was the center of a flourishing sea trade attracting European traders. The Mughals decorated the city with well-laid gardens, tombs, mosques, palaces, and forts. The city was once called the Venice of the East. Under British rule, the city saw the introduction of electricity, railways, cinemas, Western-style universities and colleges, and a modern water supply. It became an important administrative and educational center in British Raj, as the capital of Eastern Bengal and Assam province after 1905. In 1947, after the end of British rule, the city became the administrative capital of East Pakistan. It was declared as the legislative capital of Pakistan in 1962.
